Brighton Ourstory is a project that aims to maintain LGBT history. Since it established in 1989, its archive is growing and hopefully a museum will emerge out of it. They have archival records of groups like Sussex Gay Liberation Front, Brighton CHE, Brighton Lesbian Group, Brighton Area Action Against Section 28, Project Zorro and Disabled Dykes. The site states:
Our main objectives are:
- oral history interviews to preserve a record of our lives
- producing exhibitions, publications, performances to increase awareness of our lives and visibility of our history
- establish a lesbian and gay history archive in its own premises
It became a registered charity on 2004 and its website dates from 1998. They don’t have any public funding and so a good way to support the projectis to subscribe to the bi-annual Newsletter. The Newsletter usually hosts news about the archive, like new additions, obituaries -with short life story of the person who passed away, and some longer historical research articles with rich visual material. Brighton Oursoty also organises Friends events, like the talk given on January about Miss Minnie Turner, a militant member of the Suffagettes in Brighton. The project also created Images of Brighton, a permanent exhibition in Brighton Museum and art Gallery, launched 2002, that contains many oral history accounts of LGBT life.
